IIT Bombay, situated in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, was established in 1958. It is a renowned educational institution in South Asia that specializes in science and technology. The primary goal of IIT Bombay is to provide an outstanding research-based education system. It is important to note that IIT Kharagpur was the first university in India to focus on science and technology.

Although not ranked among the top 100 globally, IIT Bombay has earned its reputation as a prestigious institution with a strong emphasis on research and technology. In the QS University Rankings 2024, it holds the 149th position, making it the highest-ranking local university in South Asia.

The university offers a wide range of academic departments, including aerospace engineering, computer science engineering, chemical engineering, physics, civil engineering, and chemistry, where students can pursue advanced studies and conduct research. Additionally, it boasts 20 learning centers, a school of excellence, and four interdisciplinary programs, which include a management program and three industrial design programs.

Currently, there are over 12,000 students enrolled at this university, including undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral-level students. Additionally, out of the 16 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in India, a maximum of 20% foreign students, along with Indian students, have the opportunity to be admitted. Furthermore, students from South Asian countries can gain admission to Indian IITs at a significantly lower cost compared to other countries. However, it is important to note that clearing the JEE Advanced exam in India is a prerequisite for admission.

The university spans across approximately 545 acres and provides 18 hostels for student accommodation, along with academic buildings. Moreover, there are well-equipped laboratories, two swimming pools, and grounds for football, hockey, and cricket. Additionally, there are facilities for tennis, basketball, squash, and volleyball. To facilitate various cultural and extracurricular activities, a Student Activity Center (SAC) has been established.

Furthermore, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, has had a significant impact on the construction of the Mumbai Trans Harbor Link (MTHL) bridge, which spans 21.8 km. Professor Dipankar Chowdhury Sir, the esteemed Head of the Civil Engineering Department, has played a vital role in guiding the institution’s involvement in the design and construction of the bridge. The MTHL bridge is particularly noteworthy as it showcases the successful integration of advanced technology and a strong commitment to environmental sustainability.#
