Joseph M. Acaba is NASA’s chief astronaut. He was appointed to this position in February 2023, becoming the first person of Hispanic heritage to hold the role. Acaba was born on May 17, 1967, in Inglewood, California, and grew up in Anaheim, California. His parents are of Puerto Rican descent, which he has often celebrated as part of his cultural heritage. Acaba earned a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Geology from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) in 1990.He pursued a Master of Science (M.S.) in Geology from the University of Arizona in 1992, where he focused on hydrogeology, the study of groundwater. Later, he obtained a teaching credential from Texas Tech University, which enabled him to teach science and math at the secondary level before becoming an astronaut. Acaba served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve for six years, where he earned the rank of sergeant. Before joining NASA, he worked as a hydrogeologist and participated in projects like groundwater contamination assessment and environmental preservation. His diverse background in science, teaching, and environmental work has been foundational to his success as an astronaut and a leader in space exploration. ##
