A team of Japanese researchers has recently achieved a new world record for internet speed, reaching a data transmission rate of 402 terabits per second using commercially available optical fiber. This is approximately 1.6 million times faster than the average broadband speed in the US.
In March 2024, researchers at Aston University in the UK developed a high-speed experimental Internet data transfer technology that can transfer data at 301 terabytes per second using advanced optical fiber cable. This was 4.5 million times faster than traditional broadband internet.
The research team at the Photonic Network Laboratory in Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) developed a system that made use of all transmission bands of standard optical fibers and implemented different amplification technologies.
The NICT has stated that the recently developed technology is anticipated to greatly enhance the communication capacity of the optical communication infrastructure as the demand for future data services continues to rise.
As of May 2024, the average broadband speed in the US stood at 248.27 Mbps, while the upload speed was recorded at 34.23 Mbps. During the fourth quarter of 2023, Cox achieved the highest average speed in a test conducted on the top fixed broadband providers in the country.

The Japanese team has set a data rate of 402 Tb/s, which is incredibly fast and has the capability to download approximately 12,500 films in just one second. This is more than three times the number of films currently offered on Netflix.

According to NICT, the advancements in technology have the potential to enhance optical communication in response to increasing data needs. The researchers are now still working towards extending the transmission range for trans-oceanic distances, but are proceeding with caution.##
